The Bold Leadership Series
In one segment of our Conversations for an Equitable South series, we focused on what bold leadership looks like, both locally and in the corporate sector, in a time when the deep divisions in our nation seem to penetrate every topic or issue that arises. Beginning in March 2021, this multi-conversation series provides a space to discuss the lasting impact racism has had on people and institutions with the intention of inspiring action toward racial equity within our communities.
Watch the conversations from the Bold Leadership Series below.
Bold Local Leadership: Communities Create Change
Now more than ever, the deep divisions in our nation seem to penetrate every topic or issue that arises. Much of this is fueled by a resistance to challenges to the status quo and concurrently, a demand for equitable accountability and change. These divergent ways of thinking have stifled our ability to successfully address the everyday issues that affect our communities. These conditions force our elected leaders at every level of government to make difficult decisions.
Featuring two of our UNUM Fellows, this conversation explores the need for bold local leadership that is unafraid of and undeterred by opposition as they work to address the systems of inequity and injustice that their communities face.

Bold Corporate Leadership
In the wake of the death of George Floyd in 2020, the country was undergoing its latest racial reckoning. Corporations posted pledges affirming that Black Lives Matter and made statements about racial justice. Some went further, adding staff focused on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, or taking a broader look at ways to advance racial equity from within.
Since then, the public has been calling for corporations, companies, and businesses to step forward meaningfully in the fight for racial equity and justice.
During this armchair discussion on bold corporate leadership, EPU Founder and President Mitch Landrieu spoke with the CEO of Bank of America Brian Moynihan and the President of NASCAR Steve Phelps about the actions that businesses have taken on issues of race and equity.
