First, let me begin by thanking you for your interest in E Pluribus Unum. The past 18 months have been some of the most rewarding of my career because of talking with folks like you who continue to inspire and challenge me to do more.

Last Friday, I officially launched a new initiative, E Pluribus Unum, that seeks to fulfill America’s promise of justice and opportunity for all.  Since last summer, our EPU team traveled across 13 states and talked to hundreds of people about their experiences around race and class, equity, economic opportunity and violence.  A major component of last week’s launch was the release of our report “Divided by Design” which brings together all of the research we conducted since the summer of 2018.

Visit our interactive website that includes oral interview clips, videos and breathtaking quotes from those we met along our journey. A central theme of our findings is that we were, and still are, divided by design.  Our institutions- from schools to banks to our criminal justice system- were purposefully designed to divide us, primarily along racial lines.  We see this in practices like redlining, mass incarceration, disparate health treatment and voter suppression still today. So we have to redesign the systems that got us here.

In addition to releasing the report, we also announced our National Advisory Council and held two panels on our work to date and our plans for the next steps of our programming. We will continue to travel the South listening to people in communities as they work to address the vast disparities that keep us apart, while at the same time seeking to find common ground.

We will be rolling out a number of major initiatives in the first quarter of 2020 and hope you will be a part of that.
